Lukas Foss Conductor. Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Henry (Dixon) Cowell Composer. Lukas Foss Conductor. Fanfare for the Common Man. Aaron Copland Composer. This LP is called ''American Festival'' and is in fact an American sampler, the most predictable elements of which are the Barber and Bernstein pieces. It is also a showcase for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, which appears to be a first-class ensemble in all departments. The Bernstein is riotously energetic and is played that way; one of the melodies from Candide that it quotes is ''Glitter and be gay''. Brashly representational, the Schuman portrays several episodes from a newsreel, such as a horse race and a tribal dance.

Lukas Foss (August 15, 1922 – February 1, 2009) was a German-American composer, pianist, and conductor. Born as Lukas Fuchs in Berlin, Germany in 1922, Foss was soon recognized as a child prodigy. He began piano and theory lessons with Julius Goldstein in Berlin at the age of six. His parents were Hilde (Schindler) and the philosopher and scholar Martin Foss.

Jan. 20-21: This all-American bill will include some of the most recognizable notes in American classical music, because Copland's Symphony No. 3 (1946) draws on his unforgettable "Fanfare for the Common Ma. Trying to explain why we say that Copland's music sounds American, Castillo pointed out that the composer "voices chords more spaciously than what we're accustomed to in the classical repertoire
